Décor of such restaurants feature higher quality materials with an eye towards the “atmosphere” desired by the restaurateur. The waiting staff is usually highly trained and often wears more formal attire. The presentation of food in fine dining restaurants is always precise. When dining in a fine dining restaurant it is most important to observe dining etiquette correctly. Fine dining restaurants are far more expensive than casual restaurants.

A fast casual restaurant is a type of restaurant that does not offer full table service but promises a higher quality of food and atmosphere than a fast food restaurant. It is a growing concept to fill the space between fast food and casual dining. Counter service accompanied by handmade food (often visible via an open kitchen) is typical. Alcohol may be served. Dishes such as steaks may be offered. The menu is usually limited to an extended over-counter display, and options in the way the food is prepared are emphasized. Health-conscious items have a larger-than-normal portion of the menu. Overall, the quality of the food is presented as much higher than conventional factory-made fast food.

The word “Bistro” conjures up a kind of romantic idea of a restaurant – the sort of small establishment that you find in the narrow streets of Montmartre, though this is not the only part of Paris that you’ll find them. Typically a bistro is a small restaurant that serves moderately priced meals , usually of a fairly simple nature, and in a fairly modest setting. There is some doubt as to whence the word is derived. Urban legend attributes its origin to the Russian Cossacks during their occupation of Paris in 1815. When they wanted to be served quickly they would shout “Bystro!”, which is the Russian word for “quick”. A more likely explanation is that it is derived from the shortening of the French word “bistrouille” meaning coffee with a shot of brandy in it. Bistros have become extremely popular with tourists, probably because of their moderate prices combined with the good wholesome food that they serve, typically slow cooked foods like braised meats. Bœuf à la Bourguignonne is a typical bistro dish. A brasserie is another term for a bistro.
