Peanut or Groundnut

The peanut is a native of South and Central America and Mexico. The peanut is actually not a nut, but is a kind of pea that is used in culinary arts in a similar way to a nut. The oldest known specimens date back to 5600 BC. The peanut was brought to Africa by the Portuguese in the 1800s and thence eventually to North America, where it is now widely cultivated. It is used in Peanut Butter, candy bars and salted as a snack. Unshelled green peanuts are boiled in brine and eaten as a snack in the southern United States. They are common constituents in Peruvian Creole cuisine where, in one example, they are roasted with hot peppers and blended with roasted onions, garlic, and oil.
