Food Etiquette: Eating Dessert

In restaurants the dessert spoon and fork will be placed above the plate. The fork is used to help break up the dessert and to push the dessert onto the spoon. The spoon is used to eat with. The fork is held in the left hand and the spoon in the right.

Dessert is broken off one piece at a time before it is eaten. Breaking up the whole dessert into smaller pieces at once is frowned upon in polite society.

Food Etiquette: Eating Soup And Bread Rolls

Soup should be eaten by tipping the bowl away from oneself and scooping the soup up with a soupspoon. Never slurp the soup from the spoon, but rather tip the spoon gently into the mouth or put the whole spoon-full in the mouth.

Rolls should not be cut and the whole slice buttered in one swoop. Rather break off a piece and only butter that piece before eating it. Eating the role as a whole is considered impolite.

Food Etiquette: Eating Peas

Peas are a favorite among chefs who would like to add colour to a dish. The down-side of it is that they are difficult to balance on a fork and can be found rolling merrily around a dinner table – much to the embarrassment of the person trying to get them under control.

The best way to get peas onto a fork would be to first load the fork with a soft vegetable like potato and then push the peas against this. The peas would cling to it and would be less likely to fall off. Should this not be an option, the fork should be held with the prongs pointing down while the peas are crushed onto the fork.

Food Etiquette: Eating Pizza And Chicken

Chicken can be eaten with the fingers at a finger buffet, barbeque or other very informal settings. Everywhere else a knife and fork is appropriate.

Pizza is an informal food and can be eaten with the hands. The best way to prevent the sides from dripping is to fold the slice loosely in half when raising it to the mouth. If preferred, one can ask for a knife and fork – this comes in handy when the pizza topping is very messy.

Food Etiquette: Eating Lobster.

Eating lobster is a hands-on process.

  1. Start by breaking off the legs. Hold it by the back and gently peel off the legs. Don’t throw them away as there are nice bits of meat in it.
  2. Tear off the claws at the first joint with a gentle twisting motion.
  3. Use a nutcracker to break off the tip of the claws.
  4. Push the meat with the forefinger through the largest hole.
  5. Break off the inedible parts and put aside. That would be the antennas and beak.
  6. Grab the tail portion with one hand and the back with the other. Twist the two apart.
  7. Peel off the tip of the tail and remove the digestive track before eating the meat.
  8. The “roe” (unfertilized eggs) can be eaten, but this is normally done by a brave few.
