Many aspiring chefs dream of becoming professional caterers. As with any entrepreneurial venture there are so-called “school fees” that will be paid on the road to perfection. In the catering industry that is often done at the expense of the client when the caterer unintentionally provides bad service and products.
Off course the caterer himself has a good chance of ending up with the short end of the stick when he hardly shows any profit for all the hours of dedicated labour.
This does not have to be the case. Investing in 18 months of extensive training at a chef school like Prue Leith Chef’s Academy, can pave the way to a fulfilling career as a caterer. Part of their curiculum includes working with professional chefs in Prue Leith Catering – a company renowned for it’s brilliance in catering at any venue of a client’s choice. Learning from masters in the industry will get one to the top that much sooner.

Commis chef is the entry level position when starting out a career as a chef, even after formal culinary training has been completed. This is also an excellent way of finding out whether one is cut out for a career as a chef before enrolling in chef’s school.
Commis chefs may start out peeling potatoes and work up to assist with very demanding food preparation.
They work under supervision of more skilled chefs in the different food preparation sections and get a good idea of the pace and demands of a cooking establishment while acquiring different skills.
