A personal chef plans and prepares meals in a private home according to their client’s taste and dietary needs. Duties like ordering groceries and supplies, setting up menus, cleaning, washing dishes and serving meals fall under the charge of a personal chef.
A personal chef may also be required to cater for functions or parties. The service of a personal chef are sometimes required at holiday resorts which gives the chef oppurtunity to travel abroad.
Formal culinary training at an institute like Prue Leith Chef’s Academy can be a great advantage when applying for a post as personal chef, as their curiculum is extremely comprehensive and prepares a chef for every eventuality.

When I was first asked to write in the Prue Leith Blog I long pondered whether I, a mere mortal, was qualified to be writing for that goddess of the catering world, Prue Leith. Then I got to thinking about what, if any, experience I had in the industry. Well, in the dim and distant past I can boast to have had limited exposure, because my parents ran a hotel from the time I entered prep. school. The hotel was one of those that catered for “traveling salesmen” as they were then called, twenty or thirty bedrooms, a large restaurant and five bars, and was situated plum in the centre of a medium sized West Midlands town. The hotel was generally full on weekdays; there was a thriving luncheon trade of good wholesome English food with a clientele derived from the town’s white-collar workers. I suppose we did 80 to 100 lunches a day, 50 or 60 dinners, and the bars were always full until closing time. On Christmas Day we would cater for 150 full Christmas lunches. Melon starters, turkey with all the trimmings, Christmas pudding and Mince pies. From my late teen years until I left home to become a naval aviator, I frequently filled in as a sort of cross between Maître d’Hotel and Wine steward. So yes, I may be out of date, but I am familiar with the industry.
