The Different Stages of a Chef’s Career
Posted on June 12th, 2008 by admin
In the kitchens of all great eating establishments there are three distinct food preparation positions.
- Chefs direct the activities of the kitchen and workers. They have had specialized training and do menu planning, recipe creation, ordering of food and supplies and may have cooking duties.
- Line Cooks are responsible for preparing food under supervision of the chef. Different cooks might prepare different parts of the menu. There can be a fry cook, grill cook or pastry cook all in one kitchen.
- Food preparation workers do less skilled work like preparing vegetables or meat used by the chef or cook.
It is possible for talented and determined food preparation workers to work their way up to cook and chef, but this is not an overnight process.
