Asparagus
Asparagus is widely grown as a vegetable in Europe and North Africa. It is known to have been eaten as a vegetable by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Today green asparagus is eaten throughout the world. In China it is commonly eaten with eggs and in Europe with beef. The three common varieties of asparagus are white, green and wild asparagus (sometimes called Bath Asparagus). Gout sufferers should avoid eating asparagus as it is known to bring on an attack of the condition. Although considered by some to be a delicacy, it is, in fact, a very common vegetable. It is often steamed or boiled and served with olive oil, melted butter or hollandaise sauce.
